National Sewing Month is HERE! Are you as excited as I am?
Why am I’m“sew” excited? (pun intended) you ask.
It’s a whole month dedicated to MY favorite subject and passion since I was a young girl. You will find sales, classes, like-minded people, and exhibitions to showcase the art and craft of all that is sewing.

The Definition and Brief a History of Sewing
Wikipedia states, “Sewing[1] is the craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a needle and thread.” (quote block)
According to nationaldaycalendar.com, The art of sewing dates back to 25,000 B.C.E., otherwise known as the Upper Paleolithic Age. During this time, sewing was used to make clothing and shelter. Early materials consisted mostly of hide from animals and plant leaves. Early threading consisted of thin strips of animal hide. Furthermore, the use of bone and ivory was used as the first form of needles.
National Day Calendar continues to explain that most people think of sewing as it related to the invention of the sewing machine by Thomas Saint in 1750. Later, in 1851, Isaac Singer perfected the existing device. Singer’s prototype became the industry standard of what we know as the sewing machine. Up until the 19th century, sewing had been done by hand.
The History of National Sewing Month
Sewing Month was established by www.nationalsewingmonth.org to celebrate the art-form that encompasses countless others. Sewing, embroidery, applique, and crafts, all in infinite variety throughout countless cultures. Recognizing the importance of home sewing to the American people and nations around the world, President Reagan declared September to be Sewing Month in 1982.
Ways to observe National Sewing Month
This month is an excellent opportunity to learn or renew your passion for sewing as a skill where you can create and customize your personal style in your wardrobe or your home. Start a new project or pull out that UFO (unfinished object) hidden away in a box, drawer, or closet somewhere. It’s also a great time to take a class (check our classes here); there are many options from online courses, in-person classes, personal tutoring/mentoring. visit American Sewing Guild to find local chapters to meet socially with other sewists.

The skill of sewing can be expressed through various forms:
- Dressmaking
- Tailoring
- Costume making
- Leatherwork
- Upholstery
- Home Decorating
- Toymaking
- Quilting
- Embroidery
